Google Calendar duplicate events: why they show and how to fix them

Short answer: duplicate events usually mean the same events reach the calendar view twice. Typical causes: the same calendar is visible through two accounts on a phone, a .ics import ran more than once, a calendar is both shared and subscribed From URL, two sync tools are both writing copies, or the same invite was accepted from two addresses. Birthdays and holidays often come from two Birthdays or Holidays calendars. Fix: open each copy, note the calendar name and color, hide or remove the extra source, then delete true duplicate events. Google Calendar Help does not describe a general Remove duplicates button.

If you meant Duplicate as a way to copy one event onto another calendar, that is a copy, not this problem. On a computer, Google Calendar Help documents that under Options. Those steps are in the copy events guide. Combining calendars is in the merge calendars guide. Sharing across accounts is in the two-calendar sync guide. Resync does not remove existing duplicates. It writes private holds titled Busy.

Quick diagnosis

Start with where the second copy appears. If it is only on a phone, the extra source is often a second account or a second calendar app. If it is also on calendar.google.com, that Google Account already has two calendars with those events.

Which calendar is each copy on?

Do not delete until you know which calendar each copy belongs to. Two blocks that look identical can be one live event and one imported or subscribed copy.

  1. Open Google Calendar on a computer or in the Calendar app.
  2. Click or tap one of the copies.
  3. Check the calendar name on the event. The color in the grid matches that calendar in My calendars or Other calendars.
  4. Open the other copy and compare. If the names differ, hide or unsubscribe the extra calendar before you delete events.

What the calendar name tells you

  • A name you created, or your primary calendar, is a calendar in that account. Extra copies there often came from an import or a sync tool.
  • A shared calendar under Other calendars is a view of someone else's calendar, not a second set of events you own.
  • A From URL calendar is a separate subscribed copy. Sharing plus a URL subscription of the same feed can show the events twice.
  • Birthdays and Holidays are their own calendars. You cannot create events on them.

Duplicates on Android

The Google Calendar app can show more than one signed-in account in one grid. If work and personal are both on, and one calendar is also shared or added as a third-party account, the same events can appear twice. Google Calendar Help documents local and third-party accounts, such as Outlook, in that app.

  1. Open the Google Calendar app.
  2. At the top left, tap Menu.
  3. Uncheck the extra account or calendar. Leave one copy of each event visible.

If you use an Android Work Profile and also share personal calendars into the work account, Google Calendar Help describes copies in the Personal calendars section and a Remove duplicate personal events control there. That is the one official Remove duplicates path this page cites. It is not a button for ordinary imported events.

Samsung Calendar is a different app. Samsung Support says an event can show more than once when it was added to multiple accounts, and that you can hide calendars under Manage calendars. If Samsung Calendar is showing both a Samsung account calendar and a Google calendar with the same events, hide one of those sources. Seeing several Google accounts in one Google Calendar app is in the multiple-accounts guide.

Duplicates on iPhone

iPhone can show the same Google events from more than one place. Google Calendar Help documents adding Google to the Calendar app that comes with the iPhone: Settings, then Calendar, then Accounts, then Add account, then Google. Apple Support for current iOS documents Settings → Apps → Calendar → Calendar Accounts. Both add the Google account to Apple Calendar.

If you also use the Google Calendar app, you will see those events in two apps. That is two views, not two copies inside one grid. If Apple Calendar itself shows the same event twice, check Calendars at the bottom of that app: a Google account plus an iCloud calendar that already has a copy, or plus a subscribed holiday calendar, can stack the same day.

  • In Apple Calendar, tap Calendars and uncheck the extra iCloud, Google, or holiday calendar.
  • In the Google Calendar app, tap Menu and uncheck calendars you do not want in that grid.
  • To stop Apple Calendar from fetching Google, open the Google account in Calendar accounts and turn Calendars off.

Adding work and personal Google accounts in the Google Calendar app is in the multiple-accounts guide. Resync does not sync Apple Calendar or iCloud.

Duplicates after an import

A downloaded .ics or .csv import is a one-time copy. Google Calendar Help says imported events do not stay in sync between two accounts. Guests and conference data are not imported. Import runs on a computer. The default destination is your primary calendar.

Importing the same file again can leave a second copy. Google Calendar Help also says clicking Import twice can show Processed zero events because the first click already imported them. A later export and import of a calendar that already received those events is another copy. Google Calendar Help does not describe a merge that updates events already on the destination.

Next time, create a new calendar first, then import into that calendar. If the extra copies already sit on a secondary calendar you created for the import, deleting that calendar removes those events in bulk. Computer steps for export and import are in the copy events guide. Overlay versus import is in the merge calendars guide.

Google Calendar Help steps checked Nov 2, 2026. Cited from Import events to Google Calendar, Fix problems importing, and Create a new calendar.

Duplicates from sync tools

If two apps both copy the same events onto one calendar, you will see two copies. The same thing happens if a two-way sync writes events back onto the calendar they came from. Google Calendar Help does not name third-party sync products. It does say a later import is another copy, and that a published ICS feed is a separate subscribed calendar, not a live share.

Before you delete anything

  • Turn off or disconnect one of the tools so it cannot recreate the copies while you clean up.
  • If you only need the other calendar to treat you as busy, use one-way Busy holds instead of copying event details in both directions.
  • Sharing or a From URL overlay is a view. It does not need a second sync tool on top of it for the same calendar.

Outlook published calendars and Google iCal feeds are in the Outlook guide. From URL refresh limits are in the subscribed calendar guide. The two-calendar sync guide covers sharing versus writing holds. Resync currently syncs Google calendars only.

How to delete duplicate events

Delete only the extra copy, and only after you know its calendar. If you delete the live invite, guests lose it too.

To delete one event you created:

  1. Open Google Calendar and select the extra copy.
  2. Click or tap Delete event. On a computer you can also right-click the event and choose Delete.

If you were invited and you do not own the event, Google Calendar Help documents Remove or Remove from this calendar. That declines the invite on that calendar. It does not delete the organizer's event.

For a repeating event you own, Google Calendar Help lists:

  • This event or Only this instance: one occurrence.
  • This and following events or All following: this occurrence and future ones. Those instances are not moved to Trash and cannot be restored.
  • All events or All events in the series: the whole series.

Bulk options Google Calendar Help does document

  • There is no general Remove duplicates button for ordinary events. The Android Personal calendars Remove duplicate personal events control applies only to that work-and-personal overlay.
  • If the extra copies live on a secondary calendar you own, delete that calendar permanently. That removes its events. People you shared it with lose it too.
  • You cannot delete your primary calendar. You can delete all of its events, which clears that calendar, not only the duplicates.
  • If you do not own the extra calendar, unsubscribe to hide it. Unsubscribing does not delete the owner's events.
  • Deleted events stay in that calendar's Trash for 30 days on a computer, except This and following instances.

Google Calendar Help steps checked Nov 2, 2026. Cited from Delete an event and Delete or unsubscribe from a calendar.

How to prevent duplicates

  • Import into a new calendar so you can hide or delete that calendar later without clearing your primary calendar.
  • Do not import the same .ics file twice onto a calendar that already has those events.
  • Prefer sharing when you only need a view. Do not also add the same calendar From URL.
  • On a phone, keep one calendar app as the combined view, or hide the extra account so the same events are not stacked.
  • Hide extra Birthdays and Holidays calendars, including a second regional holiday calendar.
  • Use one sync path. If you only need busy time on another Google calendar, one-way Busy holds avoid a two-way copy loop.

Seeing two accounts together is in the multiple-accounts guide. Keeping both calendars blocked without copying details is in the two-calendar sync guide.

When Resync helps (and when it does not)

Resync does not scan a calendar for duplicate events and does not delete copies that are already there. Use the steps above to hide extra sources and delete true duplicates. Use Resync when two Google calendars should stay separate, and each calendar others book should treat the other calendar's busy time as busy.

Resync reads when you are busy on Google calendars you mark as sources and writes hold events onto Google calendars you mark as mirrors. It currently syncs Google calendars only. It does not connect Outlook, Apple Calendar, or iCloud. $1.50/month or $9/year after a 30-day free trial, no credit card required.

  • Holds are titled Busy. Description, location, attendees, and conference data are left empty, so source meeting details stay on the source calendar.
  • Resync records each hold against the source event ID and the mirror calendar. It marks those holds with private extended properties so a hold is not treated as a new source event and copied back.
  • When you mark calendars as both source and mirror, a booking on either calendar becomes a Busy hold on the others. That is two-way blocking between those Google calendars. Mark sources only if you want a one-way copy of busy time.
  • If a source event moves, Resync updates the hold. If the event is cancelled, marked free, declined, or is a working-location event, Resync does not keep a hold.
  • Resync looks 90 days ahead when it reads source events. Holds it writes are marked so they are not copied again.
  • Resync watches source calendars and updates holds when those events change. A polling fallback also runs about every 5 minutes.
  • If you delete or edit a hold, Resync records that and does not recreate it for the same source event on that mirror.
  • Read-only calendars cannot be mirrors. Resync currently syncs Google calendars only.

Set up Resync

  1. Sign in with GoogleOpen Resync and sign in with the Google account you want as your primary account. You land on setup.
  2. Connect another Google accountChoose Connect another Google account and finish Google's permission screen. Resync needs at least two Google accounts before you can start.
  3. Start syncingWhen a second account is connected, setup shows bidirectional mirroring as the intended default: real events on either side become private busy blocks on the other. Choose Start syncing to open the dashboard.
  4. Mark sources and mirrorsIn Sync configuration, turn on Source to read busy time from a calendar and Mirror to receive Busy holds. A calendar can be both. Read-only calendars cannot be mirrors because Resync needs write access to create holds.

FAQ

Why does Google Calendar show duplicate events?

Usually the same events reach the view twice. Common causes: the same calendar is visible from two accounts on a phone, you imported a .ics file more than once, a calendar is both shared and subscribed From URL, two sync tools both write copies, or you accepted the same invite from two addresses. Birthdays and holidays often come from two Birthdays or Holidays calendars. Open each copy and check the calendar name before you delete anything.

How do I delete duplicate Google Calendar events?

Open the extra copy, confirm it is on the calendar you intend to change, then delete it. For a repeating event you own, choose This event, This and following events, or All events. Google Calendar Help does not describe a general Remove duplicates button. If the extra copies live on a secondary calendar you created for an import, deleting that calendar removes its events. You cannot delete your primary calendar. Resync does not delete existing duplicates.

Why is Google Calendar showing duplicate events only on my phone?

The phone is often showing two sources the web tab is not. In the Google Calendar app, more than one signed-in account can appear in one grid. On Android, Samsung Calendar can also show a Samsung account calendar next to a Google calendar. On iPhone, Settings can add Google to Apple Calendar while the Google Calendar app shows the same events in a second app. Hide or remove the extra account or calendar on the phone first.

Why is Google Calendar showing duplicate birthdays or holidays?

Birthdays come from the Birthdays calendar, including dates synced from Google Contacts. If two Google accounts are on, you can see two Birthdays calendars. Holidays are added automatically, and you can also subscribe to other regional or third-party holiday calendars. Hide the extra Birthdays or Holidays calendar, or turn off Sync from Contacts for the account you do not need.

I used Duplicate in the event menu. Did that create a bug?

No. Duplicate, or Options and choosing a calendar on a computer, copies one event onto another calendar. That is a second event by design. Google Calendar Help documents the computer copy under Options and a move when you change the calendar. Those steps are in the copy events guide. This page is for the same events appearing twice by accident.

Does Resync remove duplicate Google Calendar events?

No. Resync does not scan for or delete existing duplicates, and it does not connect Outlook or Apple Calendar. It reads busy time from Google calendars you mark as sources and writes holds titled Busy onto Google calendars you mark as mirrors. Holds are marked so they are not copied back. Use one-way sources and mirrors if you want to avoid a two-tool loop. $1.50/month or $9/year after a 30-day free trial, no credit card required.

Connect the Google calendars you want to keep aligned, then mark sources and mirrors on the dashboard.

Resync will ask Google for permission to:see your list of calendars; see events on the calendars you choose as Sources, to know when you're busy; and create, update and delete events titled "Busy" on calendars you choose as Mirrors. We never store event titles, attendees or locations. Privacy policy
