Google Takeout archive
Google Account Help documents how to download your Google data. That archive is the account-level backup. A separate Export your data from Google Calendar page lists what the Calendar product includes.
- On a computer, sign in to the Google account you want to back up.
- Open the Google Takeout page linked from Download your Google data.
- Deselect products you do not need. Keep Calendar selected. If you also want to-dos, select Tasks. Reminders, if still listed, are a different product.
- Click Next step. Choose a delivery method, then choose one-time archive or scheduled exports.
- Create the export. Help says most people get the link the same day. Large accounts can take days. Download the archive before it expires.
The Calendar archive is iCalendar format. Help lists event start and end time, recurring-event frequency, invitees and responses, title, description, location, and created and last modified times. Downloading data does not delete it from Google. Work or school accounts may not have every product available.

Settings export and secret ICS
Use Settings when you want a file now, without waiting for Takeout. That path is a one-shot export. The click-by-click steps live in the Export Google Calendar guide.
- All calendars you can export: Settings, Import & export, Export. A .zip downloads with one .ics per calendar.
- One calendar: Settings and sharing, Export calendar. You must have Make changes and manage sharing.
- Secret iCal address: on a computer, open the calendar, then Integrate calendar, and copy the secret address in iCal format. That URL is a live feed. Save the .ics yourself if you want a point-in-time file. Do not share the address. Reset it if you did.
A secret address is not a backup by itself. Other apps that subscribe keep seeing current events. A file you saved yesterday does not update. Public iCal addresses can show Feed processing error; Export events Help says to use the secret address instead. Details are in the Google Calendar iCal link guide.

When to use CSV vs ICS
Google Calendar Help documents export as .ics only. Choose the file you can actually restore, not the file that looks easiest in a spreadsheet.
| Format | Use it when | Can you restore events? |
|---|
| ICS (.ics) | You want a calendar backup you can import later. This is the format Google Calendar Help documents for export and for Takeout Calendar archives. | Yes, as a one-time copy. Import events Help accepts .ics on a computer. Open a zip first. Guests and conference data are not imported. Imported events do not stay in sync. |
|---|
| CSV | You want rows in Excel or Sheets. Google Calendar has no CSV export in Settings. Convert an .ics file on the Export Google Calendar page. Repeating events stay one master row. | Partly. Import events Help accepts .csv with English headers. Guests and conference data are not imported. Recurrence from a spreadsheet is weaker than an .ics master event. |
|---|
| PDF (Print) | You want a visible date range on paper or as a file. Print Help documents Save as PDF. That is not a backup format. | No. A PDF is a picture of a range. Google Calendar Help does not document importing a PDF back into events. |
|---|
ICS (.ics)

- Can you restore events?
- Partly. Import events Help accepts .csv with English headers. Guests and conference data are not imported. Recurrence from a spreadsheet is weaker than an .ics master event.

- Can you restore events?
- No. A PDF is a picture of a range. Google Calendar Help does not document importing a PDF back into events.
If you need CSV rows, export .ics first, then convert the file in your browser on the Export Google Calendar page. That converter never leaves the browser. Keep the original .ics if you might restore events later.

What a backup misses
A Calendar backup is events, not everything that appears next to events on calendar.google.com. Start with what Help lists, then treat anything else as missing until you export it separately.
| Item | In a Calendar backup? | What Help documents |
|---|
| Events on calendars you can export | Yes | Export events Help describes a copy of your events as .ics. Takeout's Calendar page lists start and end, recurrence, invitees, title, description, location, and created and last modified times. |
|---|
| Google Tasks | No | Tasks are not listed on Export events or Export your data from Google Calendar. Export your data from Google Tasks is a separate Takeout download for titles, due dates, lists, and related fields. |
|---|
| Google Reminders | No | Reminders are not listed in a Calendar archive. Export your data from Google Reminders is a separate product. Calendar Reminders were migrated to Google Tasks. New to-dos are Tasks, not a Calendar .ics export. |
|---|
| Shared calendars you can only view | Usually no | Export events Help requires Make changes and manage sharing. See event details or See only free/busy does not meet that permission, so Settings export leaves that calendar out. |
|---|
| Subscribed or Other calendars | Usually no | Help does not say subscribed or Other calendars are in the Settings zip. Holiday calendars and From URL subscriptions are typically view-only. |
|---|
| Deleted events | No | Export your data from Google Calendar says you can download data that hasn't been deleted. Download your Google data says deleted items still being removed are not included in an archive. |
|---|

Restore a backup
Restoring is a one-time import. The file does not keep receiving new events from the original calendar.
- Open the Takeout or Settings zip on a computer. Help says you must import each .ics on its own.
- In Google Calendar, open Settings, then Import & export. Choose the .ics file and the destination calendar. By default, events land on your primary calendar.
- Click Import. Guests and conference data are not imported. Imported events do not stay in sync.
Full import steps and common errors are in the Import ICS into Google Calendar guide. CSV restore is in the Import CSV guide. If you are moving a secondary calendar you own, use the transfer Google Calendar guide. Copying a few events without a file is in the copy events guide. Adding a secret iCal URL From URL is a live subscription, not a restore.

Recurring backups
Google Calendar Settings has no daily backup switch. Repeat the export yourself, or use Takeout's scheduled archive.
- Takeout scheduled exports: Download your Google data Help documents automatically creating an archive of your selected data every 2 months for one year. The first archive is created immediately. Advanced Protection Program accounts cannot use scheduled exports.
- Archive expiry: Help says your archive expires in about 7 days, and each archive can be downloaded 5 times. Save a copy somewhere you control before that window closes.
- Settings export: repeat Import & export whenever you want a fresh .ics zip. That file does not update itself.
- Secret iCal: fetching the address again gives the current calendar, not yesterday's file. Keep each saved .ics if you need history.
Help also says an archive may not include changes made between the request and when Google creates the file. Deleted data is not included. A backup is only as current as the moment it was built.

How Resync fits
Use a backup when you want a file you can keep or restore. A backup does not stay updated. Resync does not create Takeout archives, save ICS files, convert CSV, or restore events. It currently syncs Google calendars only. It does not sync Outlook, Apple Calendar, or iCloud.
Use Resync when you are rebuilding a calendar and still have the original Google account. Resync uses the Google Calendar API with the accounts you connect. It writes private Busy holds onto another connected Google calendar so that time stays blocked while you import. Holds are titled Busy. $1.50/month or $9/year after a 30-day free trial, no credit card required.
- Resync lists calendars Google returns for each connected account. It hides calendars Google marks hidden. It does not take an ICS file, a CSV file, or an ICS URL.
- You mark Source on the calendars to read and Mirror on the calendars that should receive holds. Resync does not automatically export a file.
- Holds are titled Busy. Description, location, attendees, and conference data are left empty, so source meeting details stay on the source calendar.
- Each hold occupies the time. Resync sets that availability on the hold. It does not copy the source title.
- If a source event moves, Resync updates the hold. If the event is cancelled, marked free, declined, or is a working-location event, Resync does not keep a hold.
- Resync looks 90 days ahead when it reads source events. It watches source calendars with Google push notifications and updates holds when those events change. A polling fallback also runs about every 5 minutes. Read-only calendars cannot be mirrors. Resync currently syncs Google calendars only. That 90-day window is not an archive of past events.
- If you delete or edit a hold, Resync records that and does not recreate it for the same source event on that mirror.
- If the source event is Private, the hold is Private. Otherwise the hold uses default visibility.
Set up Resync
- Sign in with GoogleOpen Resync and sign in with the Google account you want as your primary account. You land on setup.
- Connect another Google accountChoose Connect another Google account and finish Google's permission screen. Resync needs at least two Google accounts before you can start.
- Start syncingWhen a second account is connected, setup shows bidirectional mirroring as the intended default: real events on either side become private busy blocks on the other. Choose Start syncing to open the dashboard.
- Mark sources and mirrorsIn Sync configuration, turn on Source to read busy time from a calendar and Mirror to receive Busy holds. A calendar can be both. Read-only calendars cannot be mirrors because Resync needs write access to create holds. A backup is a snapshot. Resync does not save Takeout archives or ICS files.
FAQ
How do I back up Google Calendar?
For an account archive, download your data with Google Takeout and include Calendar. Download your Google data Help says you can create a one-time archive or scheduled exports every 2 months for one year. For a faster copy of calendars you can manage, Export events Help says to use Settings, Import & export on a computer, or Export calendar on one calendar's Settings and sharing page. That download is .ics, not CSV. A secret iCal address is a live feed, not a dated archive, unless you save the file yourself.
Does a Google Calendar backup include Tasks and Reminders?
No. Export your data from Google Calendar lists event fields in iCalendar format. It does not list Tasks or Reminders. Export your data from Google Tasks and Export your data from Google Reminders are separate Takeout products. Calendar Reminders were migrated to Google Tasks. A Settings .ics export is events only.
Are shared calendars included in a Google Calendar backup?
Only if you can export them. Export events Help requires Make changes and manage sharing. A calendar shared as See event details or See only free/busy does not meet that permission, so Settings export leaves it out. Help does not say subscribed or Other calendars are in the zip. Work or school admins can also restrict export and Takeout.
Should I back up Google Calendar as ICS or CSV?
Use ICS to restore events. Google Calendar Help documents export as iCalendar (.ics) only. Import events Help accepts .ics or .csv, but guests and conference data are not imported from either file. CSV is for a spreadsheet. There is no CSV export in Settings. Convert an .ics file on the Export Google Calendar page if you need rows in Excel or Sheets. Repeating events stay one master row there.
How do I restore a Google Calendar backup?
Open the Takeout or Settings zip, then import each .ics on a computer from Settings, Import & export. Import events Help says imported events are a one-time copy and do not stay in sync. By default they land on your primary calendar. Phone apps cannot import. A secret iCal address is a live subscribe path, not a restore. Moving a secondary calendar you own is in the transfer guide.
Does Resync back up my Google Calendar?
No. Resync does not create Takeout archives, save ICS files, convert CSV, or restore events. A backup is a snapshot. If you are rebuilding a calendar and still have the original Google account, Resync uses the Google Calendar API with the accounts you connect and writes private holds titled Busy onto another connected Google calendar so that time stays blocked. Description, location, attendees, and conference data stay empty. It looks 90 days ahead. It is not an archive of past events. $1.50/month or $9/year after a 30-day free trial, no credit card required.
Connect the Google calendars you want to keep aligned, then mark sources and mirrors on the dashboard.
Resync will ask Google for permission to:see your list of calendars; see events on the calendars you choose as Sources, to know when you're busy; and create, update and delete events titled "Busy" on calendars you choose as Mirrors. We never store event titles, attendees or locations. Privacy policy
