Quick diagnosis
Start on calendar.google.com in a browser on a computer. Working hours live in Settings, not as events on the grid. If the item is missing there, fix the account or admin setting before you look for a grey overlay. If people still book over meetings that live on another Google calendar, that is not a working-hours problem.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|
| No Working hours item in Settings | The account is not through work or school, or a Workspace admin turned the option off. | Confirm you are on a work or school Google account on a computer. If you are and the item is still missing, ask your administrator. |
|---|
| Setting is there, hours do not apply | Enable working hours is off under General → Working hours. | Open Settings → General → Working hours or Working hours & location. Click Enable working hours, then select the days and times you work. |
|---|
| Outside hours are not greyed out | Working hours do not create busy events or fill the calendar. Google Calendar Help documents them as a warning when someone tries to schedule with you. | Click Enable working hours. Use Out of office or Focus time if you need meetings declined. Use Resync if people book over events on another of your Google calendars. |
|---|
| Tried to set hours on a phone | Google Calendar Help says you can only turn on working hours from a computer. | Open calendar.google.com in a web browser on a computer. The Calendar app does not have the Enable working hours control. |
|---|
| Hours look shifted | Travel, a working location, or a time zone change automatically adjusts working hours to the local time in your working location. | Check the calendar time zone and the location set for that day. Working hours are a recurring weekly schedule. For a temporary change, update them and change them back. |
|---|
| Other people cannot see working location | The calendar is not shared, the admin turned working location off, or they are looking in Directory instead of Calendar. | Share the calendar. People with free or busy access can see location names on Calendar surfaces. Admin Help says location does not appear in the Directory profile. |
|---|
| Want bookable office hours | Working hours warn invitees. They are not a booking page and do not let people reserve a slot. | On a computer, click Create → Appointment schedule. A personal Google Account or a Workspace account can create one. Share the booking page link. |
|---|
| People still book over my other calendar | Working hours stay on that one work or school calendar. They do not write busy holds onto another Google account. | Use Resync to write private Busy holds between your own Google calendars. Working hours, Out of office, and Focus time do not do that. |

How to set working hours
Google Calendar Help says turn on working hours to let people know you are unavailable when they try to schedule a meeting with you. You can only turn them on from a computer.
- On a computer, open Google Calendar.
- At the top right, click Settings.
- On the left, under General, click Working hours. If your administrator has turned on working location, the item is Working hours & location.
- In the Working hours section, click Enable working hours.
- Select the days and hours you work. To add more than one time period to a day, click Add. To remove a period, click Remove.
- The start time must be before the end time. Calendar may suggest hours based on your time zone, the work patterns in your country, and your schedule. You can accept, decline, or edit those suggestions.
- Working hours can only be set as a recurring weekly schedule. For a temporary change, update the weekly hours, then change them back.
- If you travel, set a working location, or change your time zone, working hours automatically adjust to the local time in your working location.
- Google Calendar Help for phones says: to set your working hours, open calendar.google.com from a web browser on your computer.
Working hours do not write events titled Busy, and they do not decline meetings. Resync does not set this setting.

Personal Gmail vs Workspace
Google Calendar Help says you can use working hours and availability if your account is through your work or school organization. If you do not see the working hours or location option, your admin could have turned it off.
Calendar settings Help describes Working hours & location this way: if you have a work or school account with an eligible Google Workspace subscription, you can show when you are available and where you are. That helps people know when they can meet with you.
Those sentences are the documented account rule. A personal Gmail account that is not through work or school will not show the Working hours setting. Do not look for a hidden toggle in the mobile app. If you need people to book slots on a personal account, use an appointment schedule. Seeing both a work and a personal calendar in one view is in the multiple accounts guide.

Hours not showing or not greyed out
Google Calendar Help documents working hours as a way to let people know you are unavailable when they try to schedule a meeting. It does not document a setting that fills outside hours with busy events, and it does not name a "grey out non-working hours" control. If the grid still looks open after hours, that is not proof the setting failed.
- Enable working hours is off. Open Settings → General → Working hours or Working hours & location and turn it on.
- You are signed into a personal Gmail account, or a different work account than the one that has hours set. Check the account in the top right, then open Settings again.
- You are looking on a phone. Hours can only be turned on from a computer.
- The hours look shifted because of a time zone or working location change. Help says hours automatically adjust to the local time in your working location.
- Other people only see availability or working location if they can access your calendar. Share your calendar first. Working location visibility is covered below.
If the real problem is that people book over events that live on another Google calendar, working hours will not fix that. See How to avoid double booking across Google Calendars.

Working location
Google Calendar Help says if your account is eligible, you can also choose a working location. That helps collaborators find suitable meeting times and know your local time zone. If your admin has turned the feature on, Settings shows Working hours & location.
To set a default location on a computer: open Settings, click Working hours & location under General, select the days you work, and enter an existing location or create a new one next to each day. You can also create an all-day event and select Working location, or click an empty space and choose Working location for part of a day.
- When you share your calendar with someone, they can view your working location. If the calendar is shared with free or busy visibility, they can view your availability and working location.
- Google Workspace Admin Help says people with free or busy access see working location names on that calendar. Working location currently only appears on Calendar surfaces, not in the Directory profile.
- An admin can turn working location off. That can take up to 36 hours to remove the feature and delete user locations. A yellow banner can appear if your administrator asks you to set a location.
- If you have Make changes & manage sharing access to a calendar, you can edit the default working location.
A working-location event is not a busy hold. Resync does not write a hold for working-location source events, and it does not set your location.

Out of office and Focus time
These are different event types. They are not the Working hours setting.
Google Calendar Help says when you indicate that you are out of office, your calendar automatically declines all meetings during that time. On a computer, click Create, then Out of office, choose dates, optionally edit the decline message, and save. The same Help page covers out of office in the Google Calendar app. An Out of office event that lasts the entire day, or extends past your regular working hours, can also update your Calendar status in work or school Gmail for senders who can access your calendar.
Focus time needs an eligible work or school account. Google Calendar Help lists Google Workspace for Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, Education, and Nonprofits. You can only create focus time from Day and Week views, and the event must have a start and end time. You can automatically decline meetings and mute Chat notifications. By default, focus time declines new and existing meetings. You can change that to Only decline new meetings.
Neither Out of office nor Focus time writes a hold onto a different Google account. Resync does not create these events.

Appointment schedules
If you searched for office hours or business hours because you want people to book a slot, that is an appointment schedule, not the Working hours setting. Google Calendar Help says appointment schedules let you manage availability and let people book time with you. You create a booking page, share the link or embed it, and a booking is added to your calendar. The booking page blocks times when you are not available.
Create an appointment schedule on a computer: click Create, then Appointment schedule. You need a personal Google Account or a Workspace account, and a computer with a supported browser. You cannot create an appointment schedule in the Calendar app for Android or iPhone and iPad. Some features need an eligible Google Workspace or Google One subscription. For eligible Workspace accounts, Calendar can automatically generate a booking page based on weekday availability that does not show times when you are busy.
To avoid conflicts, check your availability across calendars that you own, manage, or are subscribed to. Busy events on those calendars do not show as open on the booking page. That still only sees calendars you select. It does not see a second Google account you never connected. The Calendly double booking guide covers the same gap for an external booking link.
Resync does not create appointment schedules. If a booking tool already checks one of your Google calendars, Resync can write private Busy holds onto that calendar from your other Google calendars.

When Resync helps (and when it does not)
Use the steps above when the problem is the Working hours setting, a personal versus Workspace account, working location, Out of office, Focus time, or a booking page. Resync does not set working hours, Out of office, or Focus time. It does not sync Outlook, Apple Calendar, or iCloud.
Use Resync when people book over events that live on another of your Google calendars. Working hours on one account do not stop that. Resync only creates Google-only private Busy holds between a user's own Google Calendars. It reads when you are busy on Google calendars you mark as sources and writes hold events onto Google calendars you mark as mirrors. $1.50/month or $9/year after a 30-day free trial, no credit card required.
- Holds are titled Busy. Description, location, attendees, and conference data are left empty, so source meeting details stay on the source calendar.
- When you mark calendars as both source and mirror, a booking on either calendar becomes a Busy hold on the others. That is two-way blocking between those Google calendars.
- If a source event moves, Resync updates the hold. If the event is cancelled, marked free, declined, or is a working-location event, Resync does not keep a hold.
- Resync looks 90 days ahead when it reads source events. Holds it writes are marked so they are not copied again.
- Resync watches source calendars with Google push notifications and updates holds when those events change. A polling fallback also runs about every 5 minutes.
- If you delete or edit a hold, Resync records that and does not recreate it for the same source event on that mirror.
- Read-only calendars cannot be mirrors. Resync currently syncs Google calendars only.
Set up Resync
- Sign in with GoogleOpen Resync and sign in with the Google account you want as your primary account. You land on setup.
- Connect another Google accountChoose Connect another Google account and finish Google's permission screen. Resync needs at least two Google accounts before you can start.
- Start syncingWhen a second account is connected, setup shows bidirectional mirroring as the intended default: real events on either side become private busy blocks on the other. Choose Start syncing to open the dashboard.
- Mark sources and mirrorsIn Sync configuration, turn on Source to read busy time from a calendar and Mirror to receive Busy holds. A calendar can be both. Read-only calendars cannot be mirrors because Resync needs write access to create holds.
FAQ
How do I set working hours in Google Calendar?
Google Calendar Help says you can only turn on working hours from a computer. Open calendar.google.com, click Settings, then under General click Working hours. If your admin has turned on working location, that item is Working hours & location. In the Working hours section, click Enable working hours, then select the days and times you work. You can split a day into more than one period with Add. The start time must be before the end time.
Do personal Gmail accounts have Google Calendar working hours?
Google Calendar Help says you can use working hours and availability if your account is through your work or school organization. Calendar settings Help says Working hours & location is for a work or school account with an eligible Google Workspace subscription. If you use a personal Gmail account and do not see Working hours, that matches those account requirements. A personal Google Account can still create an appointment schedule on a computer.
Why aren't my Google Calendar working hours showing or greyed out?
Google Calendar Help documents working hours as a way to let people know you are unavailable when they try to schedule a meeting with you. It does not describe them as busy events that fill or grey the grid. If the setting is missing, you may be on a personal Gmail account, or your admin turned the option off. If the setting is there, click Enable working hours. Hours can only be set from a computer. Travel, a working location, or a time zone change automatically adjusts hours to the local time in your working location.
What is working location in Google Calendar?
If your account is eligible, Google Calendar Help lets you choose a working location so collaborators can find meeting times and know your local time zone. Set a default under Settings → General → Working hours & location, or add a Working location event for a day or part of a day. When you share your calendar, others can view your working location. Google Workspace Admin Help says people with free or busy access see location names on Calendar surfaces, not in the Directory profile. An admin can turn working location off.
How do working hours differ from Out of office, Focus time, and appointment schedules?
Working hours are a recurring weekly availability pattern. They tell people you are unavailable outside those times. They do not create busy events. Out of office automatically declines meetings during that time. Focus time is a work or school event type that can automatically decline meetings and mute Chat notifications. Appointment schedules are Google's booking pages: you publish times others can book, and a booking is added to your calendar.
Does Resync set working hours or stop people booking over my other calendar?
No. Resync does not set working hours, Out of office, or Focus time, and it does not sync Outlook, Apple Calendar, or iCloud. Working hours on one Google account do not stop double-booking from events on your other Google calendars. Resync only creates Google-only private Busy holds between a user's own Google Calendars. Use it when people book over events that live on another of your Google calendars. $1.50/month or $9/year after a 30-day free trial, no credit card required.
Connect the Google calendars you want to keep aligned, then mark sources and mirrors on the dashboard.
Resync will ask Google for permission to:see your list of calendars; see events on the calendars you choose as Sources, to know when you're busy; and create, update and delete events titled "Busy" on calendars you choose as Mirrors. We never store event titles, attendees or locations. Privacy policy
