Google Calendar working location: set, hide, remove, and why it is not showing

Short answer: Google Calendar working location is Home, Office, or another place for the day. It is not Busy or Free. Busy occupies the time. Free does not. Working location tells collaborators where you are so they can find time to meet. People with free or busy access can see the location name. Help does not document a Hide working location switch. Delete the location chip to remove it, or ask an admin to turn the feature off. Busy vs Free is in the busy vs free guide. Sharing levels are in the access permissions guide.

Resync writes private Busy holds onto your other Google calendars. Resync skips working-location events when mirroring. It currently syncs Google calendars only.

Working location vs Busy/Free

Set your working location Help says you can set a working location so collaborators know where you are and can easily find time to meet. Calendar automatically detects the relevant time zone and suggests meeting times that match where you work.

That is a different control from Busy or Free on a regular event, and from Default, Public, or Private. A working location does not occupy the day the way a Busy meeting does. It also does not hide event titles. See only free/busy (hide details) still lets viewers see working location names. Showing busy time on another account without sharing details is in the show busy time guide.

Eligible Google Workspace editions listed in Help: Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Education Fundamentals, Education Standard, Education Plus, and Nonprofits. If you do not get an option to set a working location, your administrator may not have the feature enabled. Some features, such as specific addresses and automatic time zone updates, may be unavailable because of your organization's data compliance and location restrictions.

Working hours are a weekly availability pattern. Help says you must turn on working hours before you set a default working location. Hours do not create Busy events. Out of office auto-declines meetings. Tentative is an RSVP Maybe, not a location. Those are in the working hours guide and the tentative guide.

  2. At the top right, click Create, then Working location.
  3. Optional: adjust the dates that you want to add a working location to.

You can also create an all-day event and select Working location, or point below a date and click the Add location bar.

Add a location for part of a day

  1. On your computer, open Google Calendar.
  2. Click an empty space on your calendar.
  3. At the top of the event, click Working location.
  4. Choose the time and date.
  5. Optional: next to Does not repeat, choose how often it should repeat.

How to hide, remove, or turn it off

Google Calendar Help does not document a labeled Hide working location or Turn off working location switch on the user Settings page. It documents deleting the location you already set, changing the weekly default, and an administrator control that turns the feature off for the organization.

Delete or remove a location

  1. On your computer, open Google Calendar.
  2. At the top of your calendar, click the location chip.
  3. At the top right, click Delete working location.
  4. Choose the date range you want to delete for the week or your entire schedule, then click OK.

On Android or iPhone: tap the location chip, tap More options, then Delete, choose the date range, and tap Delete.

Change or clear a weekly default

On a computer, open Settings, then Working hours & location. Next to each day, change the location or create a different one. Help documents selecting the days you work and entering a location next to each day. That is how you change the repeating default. It is not a Hide control.

Hide it from other people

There is no documented way to keep Home or Office for yourself while hiding those names from people who already have free or busy access. Admin Help says people with free or busy access see working location names on that calendar. If they should not see a location, do not share the calendar, or ask an admin to turn working location off. Sharing levels are in the access permissions guide. See only free/busy hides event details. It does not hide working location names.

Turn the feature off

An administrator can uncheck Allow users to set their daily working location in the Admin console under Apps, Google Workspace, Calendar, Sharing settings, Working location. That deletes already-existing locations. It can take up to 36 hours. If you have Business Standard, users can share working location, but that edition cannot turn the feature on or off.

If the Add location bar is still on the grid after you delete chips, the feature is still on for the account. Help does not document a user checkbox that hides that bar. Ask an admin to turn working location off, then wait up to 36 hours.

Why it is not showing

Use this when the Home or Office chip is missing, coworkers cannot see it, or it never appears on a phone or another calendar. Missing regular events are in the events not showing guide.

  • The account is personal Gmail, or the Workspace edition is not on the eligible list. Help lists Business, Enterprise, Education, and Nonprofit editions.
  • An administrator turned working location off, or the feature is not enabled for your organization.
  • Working hours are off. Help says you must turn them on before you set a default location. Hours can only be enabled from a computer. See the working hours guide and the Android hours page / iPhone hours page.
  • Other people cannot access the calendar. Share it first. Calendar sharing Help and the access permissions guide cover who can see what.
  • They are looking in the Directory profile. Admin Help says working location currently only appears on Calendar surfaces, not in Directory.
  • They opened Apple Calendar, Outlook, or an iCal subscription. Help documents the location on Calendar surfaces. It does not document that chip in those other apps.
  • The phone is signed into a different Google account, or the built-in iPhone Calendar is open instead of the Google Calendar app.
  • Compliance or location restrictions hide addresses or automatic time zone updates, even when Home or Office still works.
  • An admin just changed the setting. Removal can take up to 36 hours.
  • You expected a Busy hold on another Google calendar. Resync skips working-location events when mirroring.

How Resync treats working location

Use working location when coworkers should know you are at Home, Office, or another place. Use Busy or Out of office when the time should be blocked. Use Free when the event should stay visible without occupying the time. Resync does not change those settings. It does not sync Outlook, Apple Calendar, or iCloud.

Use Resync when another of your Google calendars should show private busy time for meetings, not for Home or Office. Resync skips working-location events when mirroring. It currently syncs Google calendars only. $1.50/month or $9/year after a 30-day free trial, no credit card required.

  • Resync skips working-location events when mirroring. A Home, Office, or other working-location event does not get a hold. Resync does not set your location.
  • Regular busy events still get a hold titled Busy. Description, location, attendees, and conference data are left empty, so source meeting details stay on the source calendar.
  • Each hold occupies the time. Resync does not copy the source title, and it does not copy Home or Office onto the hold.
  • If a source event moves, Resync updates the hold. If the event is cancelled, marked free, declined, or is a working-location event, Resync does not keep a hold.
  • Out of office and Focus time on a source still get a hold if they occupy time. Working hours are not events and are not copied.
  • Resync looks 90 days ahead when it reads source events. It watches source calendars with Google push notifications and updates holds when those events change. A polling fallback also runs about every 5 minutes. Read-only calendars cannot be mirrors. Resync currently syncs Google calendars only.
  • If you delete or edit a hold, Resync records that and does not recreate it for the same source event on that mirror.
  • If the source event is Private, the hold is Private. Otherwise the hold uses default visibility.

Set up Resync

  1. Sign in with GoogleOpen Resync and sign in with the Google account you want as your primary account. You land on setup.
  2. Connect another Google accountChoose Connect another Google account and finish Google's permission screen. Resync needs at least two Google accounts before you can start.
  3. Start syncingWhen a second account is connected, setup shows bidirectional mirroring as the intended default: real events on either side become private busy blocks on the other. Choose Start syncing to open the dashboard.
  4. Mark sources and mirrorsIn Sync configuration, turn on Source to read busy time from a calendar and Mirror to receive Busy holds. A calendar can be both. Read-only calendars cannot be mirrors because Resync needs write access to create holds. Working-location source events do not get a hold.

FAQ

What is Google Calendar working location, and is it Busy or Free?

Working location tells collaborators where you are working that day, such as Home, Office, or another building, city, or street address. Google Calendar Help says it helps people find time to meet and know your local time zone. Busy or Free is a different control on a regular event: Busy occupies the time, Free does not. Help does not describe a working location as a Busy event. People who have free or busy access can still see the location name on Calendar.

How do I set or add a working location in Google Calendar?

You need an eligible Google Workspace edition, and Help says you must turn on working hours first. On a computer: Settings, then Working hours & location under General. Select the days you work and enter a location next to each day. You can also click Create, then Working location, and choose Home, Office, or Other locations. In the Google Calendar app on Android or iPhone, tap Create, then Working location. To change one day, click or tap the location chip, such as Home, and edit it.

How do I hide, remove, delete, or turn off Google Calendar working location?

Google Calendar Help documents deleting a working location from the location chip: open the chip, choose Delete working location, pick the date range, and confirm. On Android or iPhone, tap the chip, then More options, then Delete. Help does not document a labeled Hide working location or Turn off working location switch on that page. People with free or busy access still see location names. An administrator can turn the feature off for the organization, which can take up to 36 hours and deletes existing locations.

Why is my Google Calendar working location not showing?

The option is missing on personal Gmail and on Workspace editions that are not eligible. An admin may have turned the feature off. Default locations also require working hours to be on. Other people only see a location if they can access that calendar. Google Workspace Admin Help says working location appears on Calendar surfaces, not in the Directory profile. Help does not document the Home or Office chip in Apple Calendar, Outlook, or an iCal subscription. Resync does not copy working-location events onto another calendar.

Does a working location block time or show me as Busy?

No. Working location is where you are, not whether the time is occupied. Busy occupies the time. Free leaves it open. Working hours are a weekly availability pattern and do not create Busy events either. Out of office is a different event type that auto-declines meetings. If you need that day blocked, create a Busy event or an Out of office event. A working location alone does not do that.

Does Resync copy working location to my other Google calendars?

Resync skips working-location events when mirroring. It does not write a Busy hold for a Home, Office, or other working-location event, and it does not set your location. Regular busy events still get a private hold titled Busy. Description, location, attendees, and conference data stay empty. $1.50/month or $9/year after a 30-day free trial, no credit card required.

Connect the Google calendars you want to keep aligned, then mark sources and mirrors on the dashboard.

Resync will ask Google for permission to:see your list of calendars; see events on the calendars you choose as Sources, to know when you're busy; and create, update and delete events titled "Busy" on calendars you choose as Mirrors. We never store event titles, attendees or locations. Privacy policy
