Google Calendar family sharing: find the Family calendar, fix it, or leave

Short answer: when you create or join a Google family group (Google Family Link / families.google.com), Google automatically creates a shared calendar called Family. Every family member can see it and add events. Open Google Calendar on a computer, Android, or iPhone while signed in to that personal account, then show Family in the calendar list. Google Calendar Help does not document a labeled Family sharing toggle inside Calendar.

Family is not the same as sharing your own calendar with one person, and it is not a calendar you create yourself. Resync can write private Busy holds from a Family calendar you select onto another Google calendar, such as work. It currently syncs Google calendars only.

Find and turn on the Family calendar

The Family calendar appears after you create a family group or join one. Help says anyone who joins the family, or has access to the family calendar, can find it when they open Google Calendar on any device where they are signed in. Create or join the group from Your family on Google (g.co/yourfamily). Calendar Help does not document a Family sharing switch in Calendar settings.

On a computer:

  1. Open Google Calendar while signed in to the personal account in the family group.
  2. On the left, look under My calendars for Family. Click it to show the overlay if it is unchecked.
  3. If Family is missing from the list, open Settings. Show a hidden calendar uses Show in calendar list next to that calendar.
  4. To add an event, click Create, choose Family from the calendar drop-down, then Save.

On Android:

  1. Open the Google Calendar app.
  2. Tap Menu, then check Family. Help says family members can find it on any signed-in device.
  3. If events stay missing, open Menu, then Settings. Find the calendar (Show more if needed) and turn Sync on if that control is there. Help says the Sync setting is for calendars you created, not the primary Events calendar.
  4. To add an event, tap Create, select Family, then Save.

On iPhone or iPad, in the Google Calendar app:

  1. Open the Google Calendar app.
  2. Tap Menu, then check Family.
  3. To add an event, tap Create, select Family, then Save.

Apple Calendar on iPhone is a different app. That path is in the iPhone section below. Resync does not turn Family on in Google Calendar.

Family calendar vs sharing vs a new shared calendar

These are three different Google features. The Family calendar comes from the family group. Sharing your own calendar keeps that calendar and invites specific people. A new shared calendar is one you create on a computer.

How to use it for a family

These are practical suggestions. They follow what Google Calendar Help documents about who can edit, colors, and notifications. They are not extra Calendar menus.

  • Who can add or edit: Help says anyone in the family, or anyone with access, can change events, manage how the Family calendar is shared, and edit its name. The family manager is the default owner and can transfer ownership. Put events everyone should see on Family. Keep private appointments on your own calendar.
  • Colors: on a computer, hover the calendar under My calendars, click Options, then pick a color. A distinct color makes Family events easier to spot next to work or personal overlays.
  • Notifications: by default you get the same upcoming-event notifications as your primary calendar. You do not get notifications when a family member creates, edits, or deletes an event. Change upcoming-event notifications from the Family calendar's Settings, then Event notifications, on a computer, or from Menu, Settings, then the Family calendar in the app.
  • Non-family guests: you can invite people outside the family to a Family event. On a computer you can also share the whole Family calendar with non-family members. Help says those people can edit events by default unless you change the permission.

Family calendar not showing / family sharing not working

Start on calendar.google.com in the personal account that should be in the family group. If Family is missing there, fix the family group or the hidden-calendar setting before you change a phone.

Not in the family groupThe Family calendar appears after you create or join a Google family group. An invited member does not get family services until they accept. Invitations expire after 2 weeks. On the personal Google Account, open Your family on Google (g.co/yourfamily). Accept a pending invite, or ask the manager to send a new one. You can only be in one family group at a time.
Signed in with a different accountThe Family calendar is on the Google Account that joined the family group. Another Gmail or a work account in the same browser or app will not show it.Switch to the personal account that is in the family group. On the web, Calendar is one Google Account per browser tab.
Calendar unchecked or hiddenFamily is in the list but unchecked, so its events are hidden. Or it was hidden from the list.On a computer, click Family under My calendars to show it. If it is missing from the list, open Settings and use Show in calendar list. In the Calendar app, tap Menu and check Family.
Work or school accountYou cannot create or join a family group with a Google Account from your work, school, or other organization.Use a personal Google Account for the family group. A work calendar will not grow a Family calendar. To block work time on a personal calendar, or the reverse, share the calendar or use Resync.

Other calendars use Google's Calendar sync page.Confirm Family on calendar.google.com first. Add the Google account in iPhone Calendar settings and turn Calendars on. Then use the Calendar sync page Help documents: check the names, save, and refresh Apple Calendar.
Child account or Family LinkChildren under 13 (or the applicable age) join only if the family manager created their supervised Google Account. Family Link can limit apps on supervised devices. Calendar Help also emails people with Make changes and manage sharing if a user under 13 shares Family, makes it public, or changes member permissions.Confirm the child is in the family group. Calendar Help does not document a separate Family calendar off-switch for child accounts. If the Google Calendar app is blocked on a supervised device, that is a Family Link app limit, not a missing Family calendar.
Family group is fullA family group can have one family manager and up to 5 members. That 6-person limit counts people who have not accepted yet.The manager can remove a member who should not be in the group, then invite the person who is missing. You can only be in one family group. You cannot create or join a family group with a work or school account. The manager can invite up to 5 people. That limit includes pending invitations. Family Link can limit apps on a supervised device. Calendar Help does not document a Family calendar off-switch for child accounts beyond the under-13 sharing notification.

If you are looking at the wrong Google Account, switch accounts and check again. Missing shared calendars that are not the Family calendar are in the shared calendar not showing guide.

Turn off, leave, or remove

Google Calendar Help does not document a Family sharing off switch inside Calendar. You leave or delete the family group, hide the calendar, or delete the calendar if you own it.

  • Leave the family group: a regular member can visit Your family on Google and choose Leave family group. The family manager and supervised members cannot leave.
  • Remove a member: the family manager can remove someone from Your family on Google. A parent cannot remove regular members that way; child-account rules are on that Help page.
  • Delete the family group: only the manager can delete it, from Your family on Google. That cannot be undone. Supervised children have extra steps before the group can be deleted.
  • What happens to Family: if someone leaves, they lose access to the Family calendar. If the manager deletes the family group, Calendar Help says the Family calendar and related events must be deleted manually. Help does not say the calendar disappears by itself.
  • Delete the Family calendar: only the calendar owner can delete it, from a computer. On Android or iPhone you must use a computer to delete or unsubscribe.

iPhone: Google Family vs Apple Family Sharing

Google's Family calendar is created by a Google family group. Apple Family Sharing is a separate Apple feature. They are not the same list of people and they do not share one calendar. This page does not document Apple menus.

The Google Calendar app on iPhone or iPad can show Family after you tap Menu and check it. Apple Calendar is different. Google Calendar Help documents adding Google in iPhone Settings, then Calendar, then Accounts, then Google, and turning Calendars on.

Calendars under My calendars, plus Birthdays, sync to Apple Calendar automatically. Other calendars use the Calendar sync page Help names: check the names, click Save, then refresh Apple Calendar. Confirm where Family appears in your Google Calendar list before you assume it will sync.

Seeing Google calendars in Apple Calendar, or iCloud calendars in Google Calendar, is in the Sync Apple (iCloud) Calendar with Google Calendar guide. Resync does not sync Apple Calendar or iCloud.

Google Calendar Help steps checked Nov 4, 2026. Cited from Add Google Calendar events to Apple Calendar and Use a family calendar on Google (iPhone & iPad).

When Resync helps (and when it does not)

Use the Family calendar when the family group should see and edit the same events. Use share-with-specific-people when one person should see your calendar. Resync does not create a family group and does not turn Family on. It does not sync Outlook, Apple Calendar, or iCloud.

Use Resync when family events on a connected Google account should block time on another Google calendar, such as work, without showing family titles. Coworkers then see you as busy. Resync only creates Google-only private Busy holds between a user's own Google Calendars. Holds are titled Busy. It currently syncs Google calendars only. $1.50/month or $9/year after a 30-day free trial, no credit card required.

  • Resync lists calendars Google returns for each connected account. It hides calendars Google marks hidden. Family appears only if that account can already see it in Google Calendar. A work or school account cannot join a family group, so that account will not have Family unless it was shared another way.
  • Resync does not automatically select Family. You mark Source on the calendars to read and Mirror on the calendars that should receive holds.
  • Holds are titled Busy. Description, location, attendees, and conference data are left empty, so source meeting details stay on the source calendar.
  • Each hold occupies the time. Resync sets that availability on the hold. It does not copy the source title.
  • If a source event moves, Resync updates the hold. If the event is cancelled, marked free, declined, or is a working-location event, Resync does not keep a hold.
  • Resync looks 90 days ahead when it reads source events. A polling fallback also runs about every 5 minutes. Read-only calendars cannot be mirrors. Resync currently syncs Google calendars only.
  • If you delete or edit a hold, Resync records that and does not recreate it for the same source event on that mirror.
  • If the source event is Private, the hold is Private. Otherwise the hold uses default visibility.

Busy versus Free on an event is a different control. That is in the busy vs free guide. Adding a work calendar to personal Gmail is in the work calendar guide.

Set up Resync

  1. Sign in with GoogleOpen Resync and sign in with the Google account you want as your primary account. You land on setup.
  2. Connect another Google accountChoose Connect another Google account and finish Google's permission screen. Resync needs at least two Google accounts before you can start.
  3. Start syncingWhen a second account is connected, setup shows bidirectional mirroring as the intended default: real events on either side become private busy blocks on the other. Choose Start syncing to open the dashboard.
  4. Mark sources and mirrorsIn Sync configuration, turn on Source to read busy time from a calendar and Mirror to receive Busy holds. A calendar can be both. Read-only calendars cannot be mirrors because Resync needs write access to create holds. Family appears only if Google lists it on a connected account and you turn Source on.

FAQ

What is Google Calendar family sharing?

When you create or join a Google family group, Google automatically creates a calendar called Family. Anyone who joins the family, or has access to that calendar, can find it in Google Calendar on any device where they are signed in. Family members can change events, manage how the calendar is shared, and edit its name. That is a family-group calendar, not the same as sharing your own calendar with one person.

How do I find or turn on the Family calendar in Google Calendar?

Open Google Calendar while signed in to the personal Google Account that is in the family group. On a computer, look under My calendars and click Family to show it if it is unchecked. If it is hidden from the list, open Settings and use Show in calendar list. On Android or in the Google Calendar app on iPhone or iPad, tap Menu and check Family. Google Calendar Help does not document a labeled Family sharing toggle inside Calendar. The family group itself is created or joined from Your family on Google (g.co/yourfamily).

Why is the Family calendar not showing, or why is family sharing not working?

Usually the Google Account is not in the family group, the invite was not accepted, or you are signed in with a different account. Work or school accounts cannot create or join a family group. The calendar can also be unchecked or hidden. On iPhone, Apple Calendar only syncs calendars under My calendars plus Birthdays automatically; other calendars use Google's Calendar sync page. A family group can have one manager and up to 5 members, including pending invites.

How do I turn off Google Calendar family sharing or leave the Family calendar?

A regular family member can leave the family group from Your family on Google. The family manager and supervised members cannot leave; the manager can remove a member or delete the family group. If you leave, you lose access to the Family calendar. If the manager deletes the family group, Calendar Help says the Family calendar and related events must be deleted manually. Only the calendar owner can delete the Family calendar, from a computer.

Is Google's Family calendar the same as Apple Family Sharing on iPhone?

No. Google's Family calendar is created by a Google family group. Apple Family Sharing is a separate Apple feature. Adding a Google account to Apple Calendar can show Google calendars, including Family if that calendar is enabled for sync. That path is in the Sync Apple (iCloud) Calendar with Google Calendar guide. Resync does not sync Apple Calendar or iCloud.

Can Resync put family events on my work calendar without sharing the details?

Resync only reads Google calendars you connect and mark as Source. If Family appears in that account's calendar list, you can mark it as a Source. Resync then writes private holds titled Busy onto calendars you mark as Mirror. Description, location, attendees, and conference data stay empty. It skips free, declined, cancelled, and working-location events. It looks 90 days ahead. A work or school account cannot join a family group, so that account will not have the Family calendar unless someone shared it another way. $1.50/month or $9/year after a 30-day free trial, no credit card required.

Connect the Google calendars you want to keep aligned, then mark sources and mirrors on the dashboard.

Resync will ask Google for permission to:see your list of calendars; see events on the calendars you choose as Sources, to know when you're busy; and create, update and delete events titled "Busy" on calendars you choose as Mirrors. We never store event titles, attendees or locations. Privacy policy
