Quick diagnosis
Start on calendar.google.com in a browser. Out of office is an event type, not a Settings toggle. If Create does not show Out of office, fix the account or admin setting before you look for a missing block on the grid. If people still book over meetings that live on another Google calendar, that is not an Out of office problem.

What Out of office does
Google Calendar Help says when you indicate that you are out of office, your calendar automatically declines all meetings during that time. The computer Help page also says your Google Calendar declines all meetings when you are not available. That is the feature: an Out of office event, a decline, and a visible out of office block on that calendar.
- New invitations that overlap the Out of office time are declined. You can change decline settings so existing meetings are declined too, or so only new invitations are.
- You can edit the decline message. Organizers see that reply on the declined invitation. It is not an email auto-reply.
- The event shows you as out of office on that calendar. Other people only see it if they can access the calendar.
- You can cover multiple days by selecting start and end dates. Deselect All day if you are only out for part of a day. You can also specify a time.
- To repeat it, use the menu next to Does not repeat and choose a frequency.
- If you use Gmail for work or school, an Out of office event that lasts the entire day, or extends past your regular working hours, can update your Calendar status. When someone emails you, that status is sent to them. The sender must have access to your calendar.
Out of office does not write a hold onto a different Google account. Resync does not create this event type.

How to set Out of office
Google Calendar Help documents Show when you're out of office on a computer and in the Google Calendar app. Working hours can only be turned on from a computer. Out of office is different: Help includes Android and iPhone & iPad steps for the Google Calendar app. If you do not see Create → Out of office in the app, use a computer.
On a computer:
- On your computer, open Google Calendar.
- At the top left, click Create, then Out of office. You can also click the first date you will be out, then Out of office.
- Select the dates you will be out of the office. You can also specify a time. If you are only out for part of the day, deselect All day.
- Optional: to schedule Out of office events that repeat, click the dropdown next to Does not repeat and choose a frequency.
- Optional: change your decline settings and edit your decline message.
- Click Save.
In the Google Calendar app on Android or iPhone and iPad:
- Open the Google Calendar app.
- At the bottom right, tap Create, then Out of office.
- Select your out-of-office dates. If you are only out for part of the day, deselect All day. To repeat it, tap Does not repeat and choose a frequency.
- Optional: change your decline settings and edit your decline message.
- Tap Save.
- Help does not document creating Out of office in Apple Calendar or Outlook. Use the Google Calendar app or a computer.
- A regular event titled Out of office or OOO is not this feature. It will not auto-decline meetings.
- Resync does not create Out of office events and does not send the decline message.

Personal Gmail vs Workspace
Google Calendar Help says if you have a work or school account, you can show people your availability throughout the week in Google Calendar. You can also show when you are out of office. That is the documented account rule on the same Help page as working hours.
If you do not get an option to set your working hours, Help says your administrator may not have it on for your organization. Treat a missing Create → Out of office item the same way on a work or school account: ask your administrator. Do not assume a hidden toggle in another Google app.
Help does not document Out of office as a personal Gmail feature on that page. If you use a personal Gmail account and do not see Out of office, that matches the work-or-school wording. You can still block time with a regular event, and you can still set a vacation responder in Gmail for email replies. Seeing both a work and a personal calendar in one view is in the multiple accounts guide.
Calendar status in Gmail is also work or school only. Help says: if you use Gmail for work or school and show when you are out of office, Gmail updates your calendar status. The Out of office event must last the entire day or extend past your regular working hours. The sender must have access to your calendar. Google Workspace Admin Help lets an admin turn automatic Calendar status display off, including Out of office according to their Calendar status.

Decline meetings and the message
Google Calendar Help says your calendar automatically declines all meetings during the Out of office time. It also says you can change your decline settings and edit your decline message before you save.
- New invitations only: later invites that overlap the Out of office window are declined. Meetings already on the calendar stay unless you decline them yourself.
- New and existing meetings: Calendar declines overlapping meetings already on the calendar and new invitations during that time.
Focus time Help names those two options: Only new meeting invitations, and New and existing meetings. Out of office Help does not print those labels, but it tells you to change decline settings on the event. If you want existing meetings left alone, change the setting before you save.
The decline message is the reply attached to that declined invitation. It is not Gmail's vacation responder. A vacation responder sends an automatic email when someone messages you. On a computer: open Gmail, click Settings, then See all settings, then under General turn Vacation responder on, fill in the date range, subject, and message, and save. You can limit that reply to contacts. Out of office will not send that email.
Work or school Gmail Calendar status is a third thing. Help says when someone emails you, your current status is sent to them if they can access your calendar and the Out of office event lasts the entire day or extends past your regular working hours. That is still not a vacation responder.
Resync does not decline meetings and does not send a decline message or vacation reply.

Out of office not showing
If Out of office is missing from Create, or other people do not see you as out, work through the table above. These are the usual causes documented in Google Calendar Help.
- Personal Gmail, or a work or school account where the admin turned the option off. Help documents Out of office for work or school accounts.
- You created a regular event and named it Out of office. That is not the Out of office event type, so meetings are not auto-declined.
- Wrong calendar or Google account. Check the account in the top right and the calendar checkbox in the left list.
- Other people only see Out of office if they can see your calendar. Share your calendar first. Calendar status in Gmail also requires that access.
- Recurring Out of office stays Does not repeat until you choose a frequency. Multi-day Out of office needs the end date set.
- Gmail status is missing because the event is not all day and does not extend past working hours, or an admin turned Calendar status display off.
If the real problem is that people book over events that live on another Google calendar, Out of office will not fix that. See Google Calendar working hours: set up & fixes.

Out of office vs Focus time vs Working hours
These are different tools. They are not interchangeable.
- Working hours are a recurring weekly availability pattern on a work or school account. They warn invitees who try to schedule outside those times. They do not block time, create busy events, or decline meetings. You can only turn them on from a computer.
- Out of office is an event. Help says it automatically declines all meetings during that time. You can edit the decline message, cover multiple days, and create it on a computer or in the Google Calendar app.
- Focus time needs an eligible work or school account. Google Calendar Help lists Google Workspace for Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, Education, and Nonprofits. You can only create it from Day and Week views, and the event must have a start and end time. You can automatically decline meetings and mute Chat notifications. By default, focus time declines new and existing meetings. You can change that to Only decline new meetings.
None of these writes a hold onto a different Google account. Setup for working hours is in the Google Calendar working hours: set up & fixes guide. Resync does not create Out of office, Focus time, or working hours.

When Resync helps (and when it does not)
Use the steps above when the problem is the Out of office event, a personal versus Workspace account, decline settings, a Gmail vacation responder, Focus time, or working hours. Resync does not create Out of office events, send auto-replies, or decline meetings. It does not sync Outlook, Apple Calendar, or iCloud. This guide is not legal or HR advice.
Use Resync when people book over events that live on another of your Google calendars. Out of office on one account does not stop that. Resync copies private Busy holds between your own Google calendars so an Out of office or event on one Google calendar blocks time on your other Google calendar. It reads when you are busy on Google calendars you mark as sources and writes hold events onto Google calendars you mark as mirrors. $1.50/month or $9/year after a 30-day free trial, no credit card required.
- Holds are titled Busy. Description, location, attendees, and conference data are left empty, so source meeting details stay on the source calendar.
- When you mark calendars as both source and mirror, a booking on either calendar becomes a Busy hold on the others. That is two-way blocking between those Google calendars.
- If a source event moves, Resync updates the hold. If the event is cancelled, marked free, declined, or is a working-location event, Resync does not keep a hold.
- Resync looks 90 days ahead when it reads source events. Holds it writes are marked so they are not copied again.
- Resync watches source calendars with Google push notifications and updates holds when those events change. A polling fallback also runs about every 5 minutes.
- If you delete or edit a hold, Resync records that and does not recreate it for the same source event on that mirror.
- Read-only calendars cannot be mirrors. Resync currently syncs Google calendars only.
Set up Resync
- Sign in with GoogleOpen Resync and sign in with the Google account you want as your primary account. You land on setup.
- Connect another Google accountChoose Connect another Google account and finish Google's permission screen. Resync needs at least two Google accounts before you can start.
- Start syncingWhen a second account is connected, setup shows bidirectional mirroring as the intended default: real events on either side become private busy blocks on the other. Choose Start syncing to open the dashboard.
- Mark sources and mirrorsIn Sync configuration, turn on Source to read busy time from a calendar and Mirror to receive Busy holds. A calendar can be both. Read-only calendars cannot be mirrors because Resync needs write access to create holds.
FAQ
How do I set Out of office in Google Calendar?
Google Calendar Help says: on a computer, open Google Calendar, click Create, then Out of office, select the dates, optionally change decline settings and edit the decline message, and click Save. Deselect All day if you are only out for part of the day. To repeat it, use the menu next to Does not repeat. In the Google Calendar app on Android or iPhone and iPad, tap Create, then Out of office, and tap Save. If Create does not show Out of office, use a computer or check that you are on a work or school account.
Do personal Gmail accounts have Google Calendar Out of office?
Google Calendar Help documents Out of office on the working hours page for work or school accounts: if you have a work or school account, you can show people your availability and show when you are out of office. Help does not document Out of office as a personal Gmail feature on that page. If Create → Out of office is missing, you may be on a personal Gmail account, or your admin turned the option off. Personal Gmail can still use Gmail's vacation responder for email auto-replies.
Does Out of office decline existing meetings or only new invitations?
Google Calendar Help says when you indicate that you are out of office, your calendar automatically declines all meetings during that time, and you can change your decline settings. Use those settings to decline only new invitations or new and existing meetings. Focus time Help names those two options: Only new meeting invitations, and New and existing meetings. If you want existing meetings to stay on the calendar, change the decline setting before you save.
Is the Out of office decline message the same as a Gmail vacation responder?
No. The decline message is the reply Calendar sends when it declines a meeting invitation during the Out of office time. A Gmail vacation responder is a different tool: it sends an automatic email reply when someone messages you. Set that in Gmail under Settings → See all settings → General → Vacation responder. Work or school Gmail can also show a Calendar status to senders who can access your calendar if the Out of office event lasts the entire day or extends past your regular working hours. That status is still not a vacation responder.
Why is my Google Calendar Out of office not showing?
Confirm you created an Out of office event, not a regular Event titled Out of office or OOO. A regular event does not auto-decline meetings. Check you are on the same Google account and that the calendar is turned on. Other people only see it if they can access your calendar. If Create → Out of office is missing, you may be on a personal Gmail account, or your admin turned the option off. Recurring Out of office needs a frequency other than Does not repeat. Gmail Calendar status needs an all-day or past-hours event and calendar access. This is not legal or HR advice.
Does Resync create Out of office events or send auto-replies?
No. Resync does not create Out of office events, send auto-replies, or work with Outlook, Apple Calendar, or iCloud. It only creates Google-only private Busy holds between a user's own Google Calendars. An Out of office or event on one Google calendar can block time on your other Google calendar when Resync writes a Busy hold there. Out of office on one account does not do that by itself. $1.50/month or $9/year after a 30-day free trial, no credit card required.
Connect the Google calendars you want to keep aligned, then mark sources and mirrors on the dashboard.
Resync will ask Google for permission to:see your list of calendars; see events on the calendars you choose as Sources, to know when you're busy; and create, update and delete events titled "Busy" on calendars you choose as Mirrors. We never store event titles, attendees or locations. Privacy policy
