Google Calendar time zone: set up & fixes

Short answer: Google Calendar shows events in the time zone it is set to use — your calendar's primary time zone on a computer, or your device time zone in the Calendar app if Use device time zone is on — not automatically every phone or browser clock. An event can also have its own time zone. Invites show in each person's local time. Change the primary time zone on a computer under Settings → Time zone. Turn on Ask to update my primary time zone to current location if you want Calendar to confirm a change when you travel. You can show a secondary time zone or a world clock, and you can set a separate start and end time zone on one event. If times look wrong, check the primary time zone, the event time zone, the device setting, daylight saving, imported ICS files, and each Google account's own setting.

Resync does not change time zone settings. It writes private Busy holds between your own Google calendars and copies the real start and end instant so those holds line up regardless of each account's display time zone. It does not work with Outlook, Apple Calendar, or iCloud.

Quick diagnosis

Start on calendar.google.com in a browser on a computer. The time you see is the display of an instant, not a second copy of the event. If the hour looks wrong, check the primary time zone, that calendar's own time zone, the event time zone, and — on a phone — Use device time zone before you recreate the meeting. If a work account and a personal account show the same invite at different clock hours, those are two settings, not one broken invite.

Events at the wrong hour

Likely cause
The primary time zone, a single calendar's time zone, or the event's own time zone does not match the zone you expected.
Fix
On a computer: Settings → Time zone → Primary time zone. Open the event and check Time zone next to the time. If you own a calendar, check that calendar's Time zone under Settings and sharing.

Time zone not updating when you travel

Likely cause
On a computer, Ask to update my primary time zone to current location is off. In the Calendar app, Use device time zone is off.
Fix
On a computer, turn on Ask to update my primary time zone to current location. In the app, open Menu → Settings → General and turn Use device time zone on.

Time zone wrong on iPhone

Likely cause
Use device time zone is off, so the app is not following the iPhone time zone, or that option is on and the device time zone itself is not what you expected.
Fix
In the Google Calendar app: Menu → Settings → General. Turn Use device time zone on to follow the device, or off to pick a time zone from the drop-down. Help does not document a computer-style Primary time zone picker in the app.

Invite shows at the wrong time

Likely cause
Help says an event appears in your local time zone and in each invitee's local time zone. Your setting, the event time zone, or the organizer's zone can differ.
Fix
Check Primary time zone on the account that received the invite. Open the event and check Time zone next to the time. The invite is not missing; the clock hour is following a different zone.

Gmail calendar time looks wrong

Likely cause
Gmail and Calendar for the same Google account share that account's Calendar time zone. A second Google account can have a different Primary time zone.
Fix
Open calendar.google.com on that same account. Set Settings → Time zone → Primary time zone. Check the other account separately if you also open Gmail there.

Times messed up after daylight saving

Likely cause
Help says events in past or future years might not reflect daylight saving changes, and events created before Calendar knew about a time zone switch might be wrong.
Fix
Confirm Primary time zone. Help says Calendar converts events to UTC and shows them in local time, and that displayed time can adjust as the date gets closer. Recreate an event only if that event was created before a known zone change.

All-day event looks like the wrong day

Likely cause
An all-day event is a date, not a clock time. Timed events convert to UTC and display in local time; an all-day date does not shift the same way.
Fix
Open the event and check whether it is all-day or has a start and end time. If you meant a timed meeting, add a time and set Time zone. Help does not document a separate all-day time zone setting.

Imported ICS events at the wrong time

Likely cause
Google Calendar Help says imported events show at the wrong time when Calendar's time zone does not match the original calendar application.
Fix
On a computer, set the Calendar time zone to match the app you exported from, then export again and re-import. Import troubleshooting is a computer-only Help flow.

One calendar's times look off vs others

Likely cause
That calendar has its own Time zone under Settings and sharing, different from the account Primary time zone. Help says if you are not the owner, you cannot change it.
Fix
Point to the calendar under My calendars, open Settings and sharing, then Time zone. If you do not own it, ask the owner. Check Primary time zone as well.

Work and personal show the same meeting at different hours

Likely cause
Each Google account has its own Calendar time zone setting. A work account and a personal account can be set to different zones.
Fix
Sign into each account and check Settings → Time zone → Primary time zone. Seeing both calendars in one view does not make their time zone settings the same.

How Calendar chooses a time zone

Google Calendar Help documents three different time zones that can affect what you see:

  • Your calendar's primary time zone. On a computer this lives under Settings → Time zone. Help says when you create an event, it appears in your local time zone.
  • Your device time zone in the Calendar app, when Use device time zone is on. Help says the time zone then updates automatically as you travel.
  • An event's own time zone. Help lets you click Time zone next to the event time and choose a city or country. That is separate from the primary setting.

Help also says the event shows in the local time zones for anyone you invite, even if they are in a different time zone. Your phone clock and your browser do not replace the Calendar setting unless the documented device option is on.

Tasks are different from events. Help says tasks adapt to the new time zone if Calendar's time zone is changed after a task is created. For example, a 9 AM MT task changes to an 11 AM ET task if you travel from Denver to New York.

Change the primary time zone

Google Calendar Help documents changing the time zone for all your calendars on a computer. Important: if you are not the owner, you cannot change the time zone of a calendar.

On a computer:

  1. On your computer, open Google Calendar.
  2. At the top right, click Settings.
  3. On the left, under General, click Time zone.
  4. In the Time zone category, click Primary time zone.
  5. Search for a city or country.
  6. Select your preferred time zone.

To change the time zone of one calendar only: on the left, click My calendars, point to the calendar, click Settings and sharing, then Time zone, search for a city or country, and select your preferred time zone. That calendar setting can differ from the account's primary time zone.

Resync does not change the primary time zone or a calendar time zone.

Ask to update when you travel

Google Calendar Help says when you travel to a different time zone, your calendar appears in the local time. To let Calendar confirm your primary time zone when you travel, click Ask to update my primary time zone to current location.

That option is on the computer Time zone settings page, next to Primary time zone. If times stay stuck after a trip, check that box before you assume the event itself is wrong. Help does not document this same prompt in the Calendar app. The app uses Use device time zone instead.

Secondary time zone and world clock

Google Calendar Help says that in addition to your primary time zone, you can add a secondary and a tertiary time zone. Additional time zones appear on the left of your calendar grid.

On a computer:

  1. Open Google Calendar.
  2. At the top right, click Settings.
  3. On the left, under General, click Time zone.
  4. Check the box next to Show additional time zones.
  5. Under Secondary time zone, select your preferred time zone.
  6. Optionally, under Tertiary time zone, select your preferred time zone.

To turn on a world clock: in Settings, in the World clock section, click Show world clock, click Add time zone, search for a city or country, and select your preferred time zone.

A secondary time zone or world clock is a display. It does not change the primary time zone, and it does not write events onto another Google account.

Separate start and end time zones

Google Calendar Help documents creating an event with a different time zone. That is the setting for a flight or a trip that starts in one zone and ends in another.

On a computer:

  1. Open Google Calendar.
  2. At the top left, click Create, then Event, then More options.
  3. Next to the time for the event, click Time zone.
  4. Search for a city or country.
  5. Select your preferred time zone.
  6. If the event starts or ends in different time zones, click Use separate start and end time zones.
  7. Click OK, fill in the details, then click Save.

To change the time zone for an existing event: click the event, click Edit, click Time zone next to the time, search for a city or country, select the time zone, and click OK.

An appointment schedule also has its own time zone under General availability. That is the booking-page zone, not this per-event control. Working hours are a weekly availability pattern, not a time zone setting.

Why events show the wrong time

If Google Calendar time looks wrong, or an invite has the wrong time zone, Help points to the display settings and how events are stored — not to a second hidden clock.

  • Primary time zone versus device. The computer uses Settings → Time zone → Primary time zone. The Calendar app follows Use device time zone when that option is on.
  • Travel. Help says when you travel to a different time zone, your calendar appears in the local time. Confirm Ask to update my primary time zone to current location on a computer, or Use device time zone in the app.
  • Daylight saving. Help says Calendar uses Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When events are created, they are converted into UTC, but you always see them in your local time. Events in past or future years might not reflect daylight saving changes. As the date changes within a few years, the displayed time automatically adjusts. If an area switches their time zone, events created before Calendar knew about the change might be in the wrong time zone.
  • The organizer's time zone. Help says the event appears in your local time and in each invitee's local time. A 9:00 meeting created in one zone is still 9:00 there; it shows as a different clock hour for you.
  • All-day events. An all-day event is a date, not a start and end clock time. Timed events convert to UTC and display in local time. Help does not document a separate all-day time zone setting. If a block looks like the wrong day, open it and check whether it is all-day.
  • Calendars imported from ICS. Fix problems importing says events show at the wrong time when the time zone in Google Calendar does not match the time zone in the original calendar application. Set Calendar's time zone to match, then export again and re-import. That Help flow is for a computer, not a phone or tablet.
  • One calendar versus the account. Help documents a Primary time zone for all your calendars, and a separate Time zone under Settings and sharing for one calendar. If you are not the owner, you cannot change that calendar's time zone.

If the invite itself never appeared, that is a different problem. See Google Calendar invite not showing up? Fixes.

Android and iPhone / iPad

Google Calendar Help for Android and for iPhone and iPad documents the same app setting. Only the wording of the tap differs.

In the Google Calendar app:

  1. Open the Google Calendar app.
  2. In the top left, tap Menu.
  3. At the bottom, tap Settings.
  4. Tap General.
  5. Turn Use device time zone on or off.
  • If Use device time zone is on, your time zone updates automatically as you travel.
  • If Use device time zone is off, you can select a time zone from the drop-down menu.

The Calendar settings pages for Android and iPhone and iPad list the same two options. Use device time zone: make your calendar use your device's time zone. If you turn this off, you can select a time zone yourself. Time zone: select a time zone for your calendar. If you turn on Use device time zone, you cannot select a time zone.

Help does not document Ask to update my primary time zone to current location, Show additional time zones, or Use separate start and end time zones in the Calendar app. Use a computer for those.

Multiple Google accounts

Each Google account has its own Calendar time zone setting. A work account set to America/New_York and a personal account set to America/Los_Angeles can show the same meeting at different clock hours. Check Settings → Time zone → Primary time zone on both accounts. Seeing both calendars in one view does not merge those settings. Setup for viewing both is in the multiple accounts guide.

Resync does not copy time zone settings from one account to the other. It writes a Busy hold that keeps the same start and end instant, so the hold lands at the matching local hour on each calendar.

When Resync helps (and when it does not)

Use the steps above when the problem is the primary time zone, Ask to update my primary time zone to current location, a secondary time zone, a world clock, an event time zone, a wrong invite time, daylight saving, an imported ICS file, or the Calendar app on Android or iPhone. Resync does not change time zone settings and does not fix a wrong primary time zone. It does not sync Outlook, Apple Calendar, or iCloud.

Use Resync when you need the same busy time on another of your Google calendars. Resync only creates Google-only private Busy holds between a user's own Google Calendars. It reads the source event's start and end, including the time zone field, and writes a hold with that same instant. Each account then shows the hold in its own display time zone, so the blocks line up. It does not create events with titles, attendees, or locations from the source. $1.50/month or $9/year after a 30-day free trial, no credit card required.

  • Holds are titled Busy. Description, location, attendees, and conference data are left empty, so source meeting details stay on the source calendar.
  • When you mark calendars as both source and mirror, a booking on either calendar becomes a Busy hold on the others. That is two-way blocking between those Google calendars.
  • If a source event moves, Resync updates the hold. If the event is cancelled, marked free, declined, or is a working-location event, Resync does not keep a hold.
  • Resync looks 90 days ahead when it reads source events. Holds it writes are marked so they are not copied again.
  • Resync watches source calendars with Google push notifications and updates holds when those events change. A polling fallback also runs about every 5 minutes.
  • If you delete or edit a hold, Resync records that and does not recreate it for the same source event on that mirror.
  • Read-only calendars cannot be mirrors. Resync currently syncs Google calendars only.

Set up Resync

  1. Sign in with GoogleOpen Resync and sign in with the Google account you want as your primary account. You land on setup.
  2. Connect another Google accountChoose Connect another Google account and finish Google's permission screen. Resync needs at least two Google accounts before you can start.
  3. Start syncingWhen a second account is connected, setup shows bidirectional mirroring as the intended default: real events on either side become private busy blocks on the other. Choose Start syncing to open the dashboard.
  4. Mark sources and mirrorsIn Sync configuration, turn on Source to read busy time from a calendar and Mirror to receive Busy holds. A calendar can be both. Read-only calendars cannot be mirrors because Resync needs write access to create holds.

FAQ

How do I change the Google Calendar time zone?

Google Calendar Help says: on a computer, open Google Calendar, click Settings, then under General click Time zone. In the Time zone category, click Primary time zone, search for a city or country, and select your preferred time zone. If you are not the owner, you cannot change the time zone of a calendar. To change one calendar only, point to it under My calendars, click Settings and sharing, then Time zone. In the Calendar app on Android or iPhone and iPad, Help documents Menu → Settings → General, then Use device time zone on or off. If that option is off, you can select a time zone from the drop-down menu.

Why is my Google Calendar time zone wrong?

Google Calendar Help says when you create an event, it appears in your local time zone and shows in the local time zones for anyone you invite. Times look wrong when the primary time zone, a single calendar's time zone, the event's own time zone, or the device time zone do not match the zone you expected. Travel, daylight saving, and an area switching time zones can also shift what you see. Help says events created before Calendar knew about a time zone change might be in the wrong time zone. Imported ICS events can show at the wrong time if Google Calendar's time zone does not match the original calendar application.

Why is Google Calendar time zone wrong on iPhone?

Google Calendar Help for iPhone and iPad says: open the Google Calendar app, tap Menu, tap Settings, tap General, then turn Use device time zone on or off. If Use device time zone is on, your time zone updates automatically as you travel. If it is off, you can select a time zone from the drop-down menu. Help also lists Use device time zone under Calendar settings: the app uses the device's time zone when that option is on, and you cannot select a time zone while it is on. Check that setting before you change the computer primary time zone.

Why does a Google Calendar invite show the wrong time?

Google Calendar Help says when you create an event, it appears in your local time zone and shows in the local time zones for anyone you invite, even if they are in a different time zone. An invite that looks off is often your primary time zone, the event time zone, or the invitee's local time, not a missing invite. Check Settings → Time zone → Primary time zone on a computer, and the Time zone control next to the event time. Each Google account has its own Calendar time zone setting, so a work account and a personal account can show the same meeting at different clock hours.

Does Google Calendar use my phone's time zone on Android and iPhone?

Google Calendar Help for Android and for iPhone and iPad documents a Use device time zone option. If it is on, your time zone updates automatically as you travel, and the Calendar settings page says you cannot select a time zone while that option is on. If it is off, you can select a time zone from the drop-down menu. Help does not document a separate primary time zone picker in the Calendar app the way it does on a computer.

Does Resync change Google Calendar time zone settings?

No. Resync does not change time zone settings, fix a wrong primary time zone, or work with Outlook, Apple Calendar, or iCloud. It only creates Google-only private Busy holds between a user's own Google Calendars. Those holds copy the source event's start and end, including the time zone field, so they keep the same instant and line up regardless of each account's display time zone. $1.50/month or $9/year after a 30-day free trial, no credit card required.

Connect the Google calendars you want to keep aligned, then mark sources and mirrors on the dashboard.

Resync will ask Google for permission to:see your list of calendars; see events on the calendars you choose as Sources, to know when you're busy; and create, update and delete events titled "Busy" on calendars you choose as Mirrors. We never store event titles, attendees or locations. Privacy policy
